They Came From Inner Space
by Jim Stroup

May 1-31

Jim Stroup has been photographing the natural and created beauty of our world for over 30 years. His extensive travels have taken him to 49 states and over 20 countries. His work has been published in magazines, books, calendars and posters.

A native of Ohio, Jim moved west to earn a BA in Photography from the prestigious Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California. The grandeur of the Sierra Nevada beckoned and Jim settled in Mammoth Lakes, a resort town on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada. This locale gave him easy access to Yosemite, Death Valley, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and the Mono Basin National Scenic Area.

Jim and his family moved to Virginia several years ago after an extensive search of the country for a new place to live. They were drawn to Roanoke by the beauty of the surrounding area, the charm of the city and the friendly people. Jim is currently working as a staff photographer at Virginia Tech.

“My work is about inner space. The camera is not just pointed outward, it is turned inward towards my soul.  I want to promote an understanding of our planet and its inhabitants through images that convey passion and a sense of wonder.  My work is a call to connect with our world, with each other and with ourselves.”

His work has been published by America West Magazine, Audubon Magazine, Golf Illustrated, the Los Angeles Times, National Wildlife Magazine, Palm Springs Life, Ski Magazine and Westways. Commercial clients have included the California State Department of Tourism, Carilion, Convertagraphics, Electro-Tec Engineering, Erath Veneer, Knauss Snack Foods, Lewis-Gale, Novozymes, Point Reyes Bird Observatory, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Schat’s Bakeries, the Smithsonian Institute, and the USDA Forest Service.
