Philpott Lake a local vacation - 4.25.08
For people in Southside Virginia with a taste for the outdoors there are plenty of opportunities just a few gallons of gas away. Some of the best can be found in the parks and hillsides around 3,000-acre Philpott Lake, which covers parts of three counties a few miles northwest of Martinsville. WVTF's Fred Echols paid a visit. The Visitors' Center features wildlife displays and historic information about Philpott Lake and Dam.
The overlook near the Visitors' Center provides a view of about half the lake's 3,000 acres.
The dam can be seen from above...
...or below.
There are trails to suit those who like their hiking on level ground...
... or those who prefer a bit more of a challenge.
Picnic spots are plentiful all around the lake.
