Carilion Clinic Combines Healing and Art

The success of physical healing is dependent on a patient’s emotions and mood, and art impacts those in wonderful ways. Carilion Clinic in Roanoke is one of many health care facilities in the country that is integrating art into healing.

Both in and out patients at Carilion Clinic are encouraged to explore, among other things, painting, crafts, music and literary arts.

Marie Webb, a consultant with the Dr. Robert L.A. Keeley Healing Arts Program at the clinic, says the outcomes are remarkable.

“We see that the patients often don’t need as much medication, have lower blood pressure, have a quicker recovery if they participate in art projects,” says Webb.

Carilion Clinic has paid artists-in-residence that make “rounds” and engage patients in the arts. Webb says writing has been a powerful tool for patient health.

Carilion Clinic is holding its first patient art show November 4 through December 15, and the call for submissions is open until September 30.

“We are inviting artists of all abilities and all ages to participate," Webb says. "The eligibility is that you have seen a Carilion provider at any Carilion location in 2015 or 2016. All types of art will be accepted from paintings and photography to sculpture and crafts, works on paper.”

The show includes five categories: Youth, Teen, Adult Amateur, Adult Intermediate and Adult Professional.
