Major Business Deal in Chesterfield Still All Secrets, Though That's Common

It looks like another big company could be making its way to Virginia. According to state documents, an unidentified business is looking to move into a major industrial facility in Chesterfield County.

The business park southeast of Richmond is already home to a huge distribution center for Amazon, a data center for Capital One, and offices for Northrop Grumman.

But there’s also more than 60 acres of unused space owned by the county’s Economic Development Authority, that might be the site of a massive industrial project.

Michael Thompson first reported the story for Richmond Bizsense. He caught wind of the project through permit requests filed by Chesterfield’s Economic Development Authority.

“These permits, it’s an application to allow the filling of wetlands and streams on and around this 62-acre site, and build this 600,000 square foot warehouse and office facility for an unnamed tenant,” says Thompson.

The level of secrecy surrounding the deal is fairly normal, in part because it helps companies pit states and localities against each other as they compete for business.

“From the localitie's perspective they don’t want the details of what they’re offering public to keep their cards close to their chest,” says Thompson.

The deal isn’t guaranteed yet though. Last year, there were reports of a similar deal and nothing ever came through.

Dealings like this have become more common as Virginia pushes hard to attract business to the state.
