For Some Virginians, A New Option Will Be Available in the ACA Marketplace Next Year

virginiapermier.com

Virginia Premier -- a company that currently provides insurance for Medicare and Medicaid patients -- announced Monday that next year, it will offer plans on Virginia’s Affordable Care Act marketplace. The announcement comes as higher rates are being filed for 2019.

Friday was the deadline for insurers to file rates for next year’s plans, and the few options available look likely to be more expensive.

Monday, Virginia Premier -- a nonprofit -- announced it wanted to get in the game and provide more options in nine Virginia localities, including Richmond, Chesterfield and Henrico. CEO Linda Hines says their rates haven’t been finalized.

“But I will tell you this. We took a very close look at where the market has gone and trying to keep the rates more stable, and not have the large increases that you have seen in the last few years.”

The plans, though, won’t be offered in the Virginia localities that have experienced the largest sticker shock -- including Albemarle and Fluvanna Counties.

"But that is not to say, once we go through with this product in future years, if we’re able to really get our arms around, how do you provide the best access and make sure that our membership is receiving the care they need, that we wouldn’t consider expanding."

Virginia Premier is owned by VCU Health. The plans will provide coverage at VCU and Bon Secours facilities.
