With its back against the wall for the second time in a week, the University of Virginia baseball team came through again. The Cavaliers defeated Vanderbilt, 3-0, in Game Two of the best-of-three finals at the College World Series.
A pair of freshmen, who weren’t around the program when UVA played Vanderbilt in the finals last year, stood out for the Cavaliers in their victory.
Starting pitcher Adam Haseley, stuck around until the sixth inning, the deepest he had gone in a game this season. He says he was most nervous in the opening inning.
“I don’t even remember it that much,” said Haseley.
The other freshman, Ernie Clement of Rochester, N.Y., broke the scoreless tie with an RBI single in the sixth inning, which didn’t surprise the head coach Brian O’Connor.
“I think the more and more you play, the more confident and comfortable they get” said O’Connor.
The season boils down to the next game and a chance for their first national championship in baseball.
