Like many rural southwestern Virginia counties, Floyd ‘s main industry is agriculture. It’s also home to a mix of creative people who grow or make specialty items for sale.

Now the county is getting behind them with an initiative to help its boutique farmers actually make a living at it.  Adam Fisher won a thousand dollar prize for technical support for his wild food harvesting business called Burgeoning Farms.

The new Virginia law, legalizing industrial hemp could bring dramatic change to the state’s landscape. Once a staple crop in colonial Virginia, it was later banned and labeled a dangerous drug. But  even though it’s now OK to grow it here, there are still plenty of challenges and legal roadblocks ahead because of its controversial cousin, the marijuana plant.

A new state law ends Virginia’s restriction on growing Hemp in the commonwealth. Several states have already passed laws allowing hemp cultivation and sale. And even as Virginia joined them this week, it continues to classify the move as a ‘research project’ that has certain requirements attached.
