On the Ballot: A Thorough Look at State Races

President of the United States isn't the only office that will be on your ballot this election day. Every congressional seat in Virginia is also up for grabs. Virginia currently has 11 congressional representatives: eight Republicans and three Democrats. We've compiled this information on your choices, so there will be no surprises when you look at the ballot come Tuesday. 

Begin by scrolling through this post to find the map where your home is highlighted. If it's not clear based on our map which district you live in, you can find your county in the general description. Once you've found your district, you can read up on your congressional choices.

1st District: Caroline, Essex, Fauquier, Gloucester, Hanover, James City, King and Queen, King George, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland, Prince William, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, and Westmoreland Counties

Fredericksburg City

-         Matt Rowe (D)

-         Rob Wittman (R) Incumbent

-         Gail Parker (I)

After serving in a number of positions at local and state levels, Rob Wittman has represented the 1st district in congress since 2007.

He’s also seeking the GOP nomination for governor in 2017 and supports Donald Trump, telling reporter Matt Laslo  "I've told folks where I disagree with him and that's the key, but you know he was elected by over 14 million people and that's a part of our process and that's what makes this country great, the people have made their choice and I’m going to honor their choice; but I'm also going to speak out to whether there are differences.”

Challenger Matt Rowe is a Bowling Green councilman who works in Stafford County as a Geographic Information Systems Anaylist. Gail Parker lives in Alexandria and, according to her website, is running on a pro-rail platform.

2nd District: Accomack, James City, Northampton, York Counties

Hampton, Norfolk, Poquoson, Virginia Beach, and Williamsburg Cities

-         Shaun Brown (D)

-         Scott Taylor (R)

Scott Taylor ran to represent the 2nd district in 2010, but lost to Scott Rigell (who is stepping down after 3 terms) in the primary. Taylor is a former Navy Seal and currently serves in the House of Delegatesrepresenting Virginia's 85th District. 

According to her website, Shaun Brown is an economist, management consultant, small business owner. Brown was a delegate for Bernie Sanders at the Democratic National Convention and now supports Hillary Clinton.

3rd District: Isle of Wight and James City Counties

Chesapeake, Franklin, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Suffolk Cities

-         Bobby Scott (D) Incumbent

-         Marty Williams (R)

Bobby Scott was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1977, Senate of Virginia in 1982, and to Congress in 1992 after the 3rd district was redrawn.Rumors of Scott eyeing Tim Kaine's senate seat if Hillary Clinton wins the presidency have been afloat since Kaine was chosen to serve as her running partner.

Marty Williams served in the Chesapeake Police Department for 25 years and currently serves as chairman of the Chesapeake Planning Commission. 

4th District: Charles City, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Greensville, Henrico, Prince George, Southampton, Surry, and Sussex Counties. Chesapeake, Colonial Heights, Emporia, Hopewell, Petersburg, Richmond, and Suffolk Cities

-         Donald McEachin (D)

-         Mike Wade (R)

The 4th district has been represented by Republican Randy Forbes. But Forbes chose not to run for re-election when a court redrew the district lines to include Richmond and Petersburg - which means the seat could switch party hands.

Donald McEachin served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1996-2002 and from 2006-2008. He's served in the Senate of Virginia since 2008 representing the 9th district. McEachin is a partner in a Richmond-area personal injury law firm and has a Master of Divinity degree from Virginia Union University.

Mike Wade served as a member of the Henrico Division of Police for 22 years before being elected Henrico County Sheriff in 1999.

5th District: Albemarle, Appomattox, Bedford, Brunswick, Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, Cumberland, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Franklin, Greene, Halifax, Henry, Lunenburg, Madison, Mecklenburg, Nelson, Pittsylvania, Prince Edward, and Rappahannock Counties

Bedford, Charlottesville, and Danville Cities

-         Jane Dittmar (D)

-         Tom Garrett (R)

Incumbent Robert Hurt is stepping down, making way for one of these two very different candidates to take his place. The 5th leans Republican, but Political Scientists think this race could be closer than in the past.

Jane Dittmar is a former chair of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors, appointed member f the Governor's Broadband Committee, mediator of the Supreme Court of Virginia, and former president and CEO of the Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Tom Garrett currently represents the 22nd district in Virginia's Senate, and was formerly a Commonwealth's Attorney in Louisa County. 

6th District: Amherst, Augusta, Bath, Bedford, Botetourt, Highland, Page, Roanoke, Rockbridge, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Warren Counties

Buena Vista, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Lynchburg, Roanoke, Staunton, Waynesboro Cities

-         Bob Goodlatte (R) Incumbent

Bob Goodlatte has been re-elected 10 times to serve the 6th district in congress since 1992. He chairs the House Judiciary Committee and has been outspoken in calling for a re-examination of Hillary Clinton's emails. He supports Donald Trump, but not vocally

Kai Degner has served two terms on Harrisonburg's City Council, and has held a variety of civic leadership positions in the city.

7th District: Amelia, Chesterfield, Culpeper, Goochland, Henrico, Louisa, Nottoway, Orange, Powhatan, and Spotsylvania Counties

-         Eileen Bedell (D)

-         Dave Brat (R) Incumbent

No Virginian - especially residents of the 7th - will ever forget Richmond native, longtime congressman and former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor losing the 2014 primary to Dave Brat, a professor at Randolph Macon college. Brat ran his campaign on an anti-establishment message and notable raised just $200,000 to Cantor's $5 million.  According to reports from Matt Laslo, Brat has demonstrably stood by his conservative principles

Eileen Bedell practices law that, according to her website, focuses on workplace-oriented issues. Bedell is a native of Fairfax County but now lives and works in Chesterfield.

8th District: Arlington and Fairfax Counties

Alexandria and Falls Church Cities

-         Don Beyer (D) Incumbent

-         Charles Hernick (R)

-         Julio Garcia (I)

Don Beyeris finishing up his first year in congress. Beyer was Lieutenant Governor of Virginia from 1990-1998. He ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1997. There has been speculation that, like Bobby Scott, Beyer might also be eyeing Tim Kaine's senate seat.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Charles Hernick says he's not a Trump supporter. Hernick is an international environmental consultant who has garnered the endorsement of Carly Fiorina, a resident of the 8th district. 

9th District: Alleghany, Bland, Buchanan, Carroll, Craig, Dickenson, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Henry, Lee, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, Roanoke, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise, and Wythe Counties

Bristol, Covington, Galax, Martinsville, Norton, Radford, and Salem Cities

-         Morgan Griffith (R) Incumbent

-         Janice Allen Boyd (I)

Morgan Griffithwas elected to Virginia's House of Delegates in 1993 and has served as the 9th district's representative since 2011. He heads a law firm branch in Salem and serves on the conservative Freedom Caucusin congress. 

Derek Kitts is a veteran and native of Southwest Virginia. He recently retired after 24 years in the Army, where he received two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.

10th District: Clarke, Fairfax, Frederick, Loudoun, and Prince William Counties

Manassas, Manassas Park, and Winchester Cities

-         LuAnn Bennett (D)

-         Barbara Comstock (R) Incumbent

The 10th district race has been anexpensive one - and was flagged as one to watch early in the process.

Barbara Comstock served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2010 to 2014 before running for congress. She has never supported Donald Trump and has been vocalin her opposition to him. 

Opponent LuAnn Bennett is a local real estate executive and small business owner. She has been endorsed by Senator Tim Kaine, Governor Terry McAuliffe, and President Barack Obama - who has recently been featured in campaign ads supporting Bennett.

11th District: Fairfax and Prince William Counties

Fairfax City

-         Gerry Connolly (D) Incumbent

Gerry Connolly has served Virginia's 11th district since 2009. He currently sits on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. He is running unopposed
