COVID-19 Deaths Surpass 1,000, Positive Tests Now Exceed 30,000

The department’s last update on Sunday showed that 1,009 people have died from the illness in Virginia.

Most of those deaths are among people 60 and older.

The number of positive cases now sits at 30,338. Nearly 4,000 Virginians have been hospitalized with the virus.

The state is reporting more than 300 outbreaks across Virginia. 60% of those outbreaks are at long-term care facilities.

Fairfax County remains the hardest-hit locality in the Commonwealth with more than 7,600 cases. The Richmond area has nearly 3,000 confirmed cases.

There are some positive signs, though, as the state’s positivity rate – a key metric health officials have been monitoring – dropped slightly over the weekend. It currently sits at 14.5% – down from Friday’s 15%.

Data compiled by the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association shows that the state’s hospitals have thousands of available ventilators and beds. No Virginia hospital has indicated a shortage of personal protective equipment either.

Governor Ralph Northam is expected to give another update on the state's response to the virus at 2pm Monday.
