First Positive COVID-19 Case Reported in Southwest Virginia

CDC

Southwest Virginia now has its first positive case of COVID-19.  Carilion Clinic in Roanoke reported the case Thursday evening.

The patient is described as an elderly adult who was hospitalized on Monday.  A positive test result came back from a private lab Thursday.  A news release from Carilion says the person is a resident of the Alleghany Health District, which includes Botetourt, Craig, Alleghany and Roanoke counties and the cities of Salem and Covington.

The patient has been isolated and is in serious condition. Carilion says the Virginia Department of Health is now tracing the patient’s contacts.

As of Thursday, Carilion said it had conducted 172 tests for COVID-19.   In addition to the one positive case, 69 have come back negative.  102 tests are still pending.

Begining Friday morning at 9:00 am, no visitors will be allowed at any Carilion facilities.  Exceptions will be made for obstetric and pediatric patients.
