A Football Rivalry, a Cup and a Bowl

It’s a rivalry dating back to 1896. The University of Virginia and Virginia Tech in a football matchup that, every year, sends one team home with a prestigious award.

But, there was more at stake for both state teams in Friday’s post-Thanksgving game.

It was a back and forth, up and down ballgame, but Virginia Tech barely hangs on to defeat UVA 24 to 20, in the 96th Annual Commonwealth Cup contest. This was the 11th consecutive win for the Hokies over the Cavaliers.

Both teams had more than the cup in their sights, since each had a shot at a bowl appearance. Both Tech and UVA came to the game with 5 and 6 records. A team needs at least six wins to be bowl eligible, so both programs had a post-season game on the line.

Tech now becomes eligible for a bowl bid and will be head coach, Frank Beamer’s 22nd consecutive bowl.
