Garden Week in Virginia

Collection Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam,

It’s Garden Week in Virginia, with visitors invited to stop by more than 250 gardens, homes and historic landmarks, but something surprising is happening in Richmond.

About 30,000 people have opted to go inside– to check out the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ show of floral paintings by Van Gogh, Manet, Matisse, Renoir and other 19th century masters.

“There is a presence of live flowers in the exhibit, in a separate room, where visitors are invited to sketch a bouquet of flowers and play the part of the artist and leave their sketches behind for others to admire, and so far we’ve collected thousands of sketches," says Mitchell Merling, the museum's head of European art and curator of the show.

Van Gogh, Manet, Matisse – the Art of the Flower – will be on display through June 21st.
