Pipeline Protest & Vigils Around Virginia

Two days of anti-pipeline actions around Virginia begin today. They’re part of an effort to convince the governor to reject two natural gas pipeline projects awaiting approval by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

Organizers of the pipeline protests are drawing a connection between extreme weather events and the role of fossil fuels in

climate change.  The proposed Mountain Valley and Atlantic Coast pipelines would carry natural gas through the state. Mike Tidwell is Director of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network. He is also a founding member, of a group called Interfaith Power and Light.

“This is a moral issue and we want to connect the moral dots in all of the events and proposed energy systems being put before Virginia.

The statewide protest action will include interfaith prayer vigils for hurricane victims. Faith leaders, students, and others are hoping to persuade Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe to reject water permits needed by pipeline companies in order to proceed with the projects. Actions are planned to take place at 7 Department of Environmental Quality offices around the state.
