Police Ask Public for Help in Solving Montgomery County Murder Case

Virginia State Police

Nearly 10 years ago, two Virginia Tech students were brutally murdered in Montgomery County. Authorities are now renewing their efforts and turning to the public to help close the case.

On August 26th, 2009, Heidi Childs and David Metzler left for Caldwell Fields in the Jefferson National Forest. Their bodies were found in a parking lot there the next day.

Since then, investigators have collected extensive evidence – including DNA samples – but a culprit still hasn’t been found.

Authorities with the Virginia State Police and other law enforcement agencies – along with the families of the victims – aren’t giving up hope though.

“Someone knows who and what happened," says Don Childs, Heidi's father. "Someone can bring this to a close. Someone can’t keep quiet about this any longer. Someone wants to get this off their chest. Now is your opportunity.”

A new website has been set up where people can learn about Heidi and David. Officials are also hoping anyone with information will use the site’s online tip section. Tipsters can remain anonymous if they choose.

Finally, the FBI is offering an additional $28,000 reward for any details that lead to an arrest in the case. That brings the total reward up to $100,000.
