Presidential Candidates Attend Annual Virginia Democratic Gala

Two presidential candidates will be in Virginia this weekend. They’re speaking to hundreds of state Democrats at the annual Blue Commonwealth Gala.

Pete Buttigieg, a Mayor from Indiana, and Amy Klobuchar, a Senator from Minnesota, are headlining the annual event. It’s Saturday night in Richmond, and a fundraiser for the Virginia Democratic Party.

“We’re really lucky to get both of them to come,” says DPVA communication director Jake Rubenstein. “The last time we had two presidential candidates was back in 2007 when we had President Obama and Secretary Clinton, at that time both Senators.”

This campaign season, Buttigieg and Klobuchar aren’t the first Democratic presidential candidates to swing through the state. Former Texas Congressman Beto O’Rourke hit the campaign trail in Virginia back in April.

Two state lawmakers are taking this weekend as an opportunity to endorse Pete Buttigieg. Delegate Mark Keam and Senator Adam Ebbin announced they’re endorsing the mayor. They’re the first state lawmakers to make public endorsements in the 2020 Democratic presidential race.
