Second Virginian Dies of COVID-19, First Cases Reported in Charlottesville, Henrico County

Virginia Department of Health

The state Department of Health says the individual lived in the Peninsula health district – which includes Williamsburg and Newport News. The male patient was in his 70’s. Officials haven't determined how he contracted the virus.

Richmond-area media report Henrico County has its first presumptive, positive case of the novel coronavirus. The woman is in her 20's and is at home recovering.

Charlottesville also recorded its first positive case of COVID-19 Monday.  The Thomas Jefferson Health District said the patient is a man in his 50's and the case is likely tied to travel.

Health officials are now tracing and notifying contacts of the man.  Those contacts will be asked to stay home and away from others for 14 days.

Dr. Denise Bonds, the district's health director, said in a news release that she's not surprised the area has seen a positive case. “The situation with COVID-19 outbreak is rapidly changing," she noted.

Testing for this case was conducted by a commercial lab, not the Virginia state lab.

The University of Virginia says the case is a member of the university community.

Around noon Monday, the Virginia Department of Health reported 51 presumptive positive cases of COVID-19. That number does not appear to include the Charlottesville or Henrico County cases.

In the lastest figures, Chesterfield County recorded its second case. And a cluster of cases in the Peninsula Health District has grown to eleven cases in James City and York counties.

The Virginia state capitol building and the legislative office building will close to the public starting Monday evening.  They are expected to be closed through the end of the month, according to legislative leaders.
