The Upside of Trump Talk

Recent remarks by Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump have certainly gotten attention.  But some say getting these issues on the public agenda is a good thing.

Professor Brandy Faulkner teaches gender, race and politics at Virginia Tech. She found Donald Trump’s comments about women extremely offensive, but she says they offer an ideal teachable moment for her students.

"Whenever we have an opportunity to explore, in the public sphere, what is acceptable and what is unacceptable, what things offend us, what things are offensive, regardless of who it actually offends, we can begin to move forward in terms of sex and gender relations.”

Faulkner says Trump’s comments are giving her classes real world examples of gender and race issues to discuss. And she says getting these sometimes uncomfortable topics on the public agenda is one positive thing that should come out of it.
