Virginia Cavaliers Open College World Series With Weekend Victory

The University of Virginia baseball team was so close to winning the national championship last year.  The Cavaliers are back in Omaha this year to try it again and they’re off to a good start.

The fans have seen this before, and UVA’s experience factor played a role in its 5-3 victory over Arkansas on Saturday.

Kenny Towns, a senior from Burke. socked a two-out double in the eighth inning to give UVA the lead for good.  Towns, one of 15 players back last year’s team that finished runner-up to Vanderbilt at the College World Series, reflects on his big moment.

“You have some butterflies regardless,” said Towns.  “I still felt pretty comfortable playing in the ballpark and it was pretty fun.”

Because of injuries to the Cavaliers this year, Towns, a third baseman, is the only Cavalier to play the same position.  UVA is 40-22 going into tonight’s (Monday, 6/15) winner’s bracket game against Florida.
