Many of Virginia’s colleges are back in session this week. Classes at Virginia Tech started Monday, the University of Virginia’s began today -- and Virginia Commonwealth University kicks things off tomorrow.

Erin Jones is adjusting to her first days on a college campus.

“Adulting --- that’s what I call it. Its odd being out by myself and my parents not being around, I really enjoy it!”

Jones and her peers at VCU in Richmond make up the class of 2020 -- students born mostly in 1998. They begin their first college courses Wednesday.

“I have my notebooks and pens and pencils, I don’t have my laptop yet though. I’m ready to get started in classes.”

Reuban Rodriguez is Dean of Student Affairs at VCU. He says he’s pleased at the diversity and size of this freshman class.

“So this is the largest freshman class that we’ve ever had at VCU. We’ll have about 4,200 new freshman students. About 88% of them come from various places in Virginia. We have almost 1,000 coming from the Richmond metro area.”

VCU isn’t alone in breaking records this year. The University of Virginia is welcoming its most socio-economically diverse class in recent history.

And Virginia Tech had the most diverse applicant pool its ever had.
