Virginia Reports First Case of Multisymptom Inflammatory Syndrome in Children

CDC

Virginia is reporting its first case of a mysterious illness in children that appears to be related to COVID-19.

The state health department says the child from the Fairfax area was hospitalized on May 5th and is now recovering at home.

The illness, called Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C), may cause problems with a child’s heart and other organs. Most children have a fever lasting several days as well as other symptoms like irritability, unexplained abdominal pain, diarrhea and vomiting.

It was first diagnosed in the United Kingdom in April and then in New York City in early May.
