Among the questions we asked in the Marketplace-Edison Research poll was how people would handle an unexpected expense. About a quarter of respondents said it would be "very difficult" to come up with $1,000 to cover a bill, and about a third said it would be “somewhat difficult."

The finding confirms that many people lack personal savings, investments and retirement accounts they can tap into during an emergency.

Vacancies shift balance of power at the Fed

President Obama’s decision to nominate Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court is all over the news. But it's hardly the only vacant federal job in Washington. Just look at the Federal Reserve. 

There are supposed to be seven members on the Fed's Board of Governors. But right now, there are only five. President Obama’s nominees for the two vacant slots haven’t been approved by the Senate.

At her press conference after the latest Fed meeting, Chair Janet Yellen said she would like the nominees to get a hearing.

You may have  heard about tax inversions – that’s where a U.S.-based company merges with a foreign firm and, voila, the new company avoids paying its U.S. tax bill.

A new article in the New England Journal of Medicine finds these tax inversions in health care have a kind of double whammy effect.
