A bill making its way through the General Assembly would prevent drivers’ private information from being accessed by law enforcement agencies, including key identifying information belonging to people who lack legal immigration status.

In light of months-long wait times to get access to an in-person appointment at Virginia’s Department of Motor Vehicles, state officials are encouraging those who are allowed to use a new online license renewal option.

Just under 35,000 people in Virginia have gotten their driver’s license back. That’s since July 1st, when a new policy stopped the practice of suspending licenses as a punishment for not paying court fines. 

The next push is reaching the hundreds of thousands who are eligible, but just need to apply.
