Every year since 2008, Congress has authorized more than $30 million in funding to spur economic development in a region referred to as the “Black Belt.”

The region extends through seven states from Virginia to Mississippi and includes the largest concentration of historically black communities in the rural South. Most are economically deprived, a result of slavery and Jim Crow laws.

As older chicken houses on the Eastern Shore are being replaced with much larger operations, neighbors and environmental groups have a lot of questions about air and water pollution.

Now, a new data tool will give the public a little more information about how the industrial byproduct - poultry manure – is being used.

For the past three years, a mysterious microorganism has been infecting the famous wild ponies of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge.

The infection is known as swamp cancer and it has killed eight female ponies so far.

NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on the Eastern Shore sits at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. 

It's a climate change hot spot, where rising waters and stronger storms are eroding about 12 feet of shoreline every year.  For NASA, science and persistence are major tools in climate resilience.

Last week, Governor Ralph Northam unveiled the final phase of a 15 year plan to clean up the Chesapeake Bay.  The goal is to reduce nitrogen and phosphorous runoff which is blamed for massive algae blooms and dead zones. 

Experts say one thing that might keep us from achieving that goal by 2025 is massive chicken farms on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
