The hospital system serving the southwest corner of Virginia and northeast Tennessee will suspend elective procedures beginning Monday.


The number of active COVID-19 cases in the Roanoke area continues to jump. And health officials fear it will get even higher in the weeks after Thanksgiving.

COVID-19 cases in the Roanoke region have gone up dramatically over the past two weeks.

Health officials say the data shows people need to take stronger action to get the virus under control.

Virginia's statewide positivity rate currently sits around 5%. But, it's closer to 9% in certain areas of southwestern Virginia, especially those localities near the Tennessee border.
