The interim superintendent of Virginia Military Institute now has the job permanently.  The school’s board of visitors voted unanimously Thursday to elevate Maj. Gen. Cedric Wins to the post.

Wins is the school’s 15th superintendent and the first African American to hold the position.

Wins graduated from VMI in 1985 and served in the U. S. Army for 34 years.

The previous superintendent, Gen. Binford Peay, resigned after a series of reports about racist traditions and treatment of cadets at the school in Lexington.  Wins was appointed interim superintendent in November.
