Republican candidate for governor Glenn Youngkin is providing some more detail about what he might do if elected.
Rolling out several new policy proposals, Republican candidate for governor Glenn Youngkin says he wants to eliminate the grocery tax. And he wants to reduce the gas tax. He also wants to conduct an audit to root out waste, fraud and abuse in government. And he wants to require voters approve any increase to local property taxes.
“And under my plan we will have the power," the Republican candidate says. "We will, in fact, require a vote before homeowners taxes are ever increased again.”
Stephen Farnsworth at the University of Mary Washington says the platform of policy proposals, which Youngkin calls his Day One Game Plan, seems like pretty standard Republican politics.
"Youngkin is doing what he needs to do to tailor a message that is more appealing to the suburbs than the traditional Republican statewide message, which is heavy on a socially-conservative message," Farnsworth explains.
Youngkin has yet to take a position on many of those issues, like whether he supports an assault weapons ban or whether he wants to require an ultrasound before a woman can get an abortion. A spokeswoman for his opponent, Terry McAuliffe, says Youngkin's tax plan will result in drastic cuts to public education and drive Virginia’s economy into the ditch.
