The University of Richmond upset Iowa in the NCAA tournament Thursday.

And Virginia Tech hopes to do the same in its first-round game Friday afternoon.

The 10 and 10 record in January seems like a distant past. The Hokies have won 13 of 15 games since and will meet the Texas Longhorns in the first round.

They’ve never played each other in men’s basketball, but the setting is familiar to senior Storm Murphy. His hometown of Middleton, Wisconsin, is less than 100 miles away from Milwaukee.

"It means a lot to be able to come back home," Murphy said in a Thursday news conference.  "I’ve been to Milwaukee countless times. I’ve played so many games in Milwaukee and have a lot of friends from here, in Madison and all over the state."

Murphy transferred from Wofford after Mike Young was hired as Virginia Tech’s coach. Murphy considered transferring to Wisconsin, but Young is glad Murphy chose the Hokies.

Norfolk State and Longwood lost in the tournament Thursday.
