The Summer Kickoff Festival, June 7-8, is the perfect excuse to round up some friends, grab some portable chairs or picnic blankets, and check out the breadth of Richmond’s eclectic music scene. Friday evening features Full Moon Fever, a Tom Petty tribute band, and a set by Richmond’s favorite yacht rockers, Three Sheets to the Wind.
Five groups take the CoStar Group Builds stage on Saturday starting at 1 pm: Leading off is Fiesta del Sol, a Latin dance performance by Latin Ballet of Virginia; followed by a progressive soul set by Shera Shi; then Weekend Plans play a unique blend of funk, hip hop and jazz; followed by the pioneers of indie-salsa revival, Bio Ritmo; and the night ends with a set of neo-traditional blues fusion by Justin Golden and the Devil’s Coattails.
Between sets, enjoy a craft beer or cider, wine and a diverse line-up of local food vendors. On Saturday, check out the Richmond Represents Tent and Stage to participate in interactive performances, engage with performance- and culture-focused organizations, and more! Learn a new dance step, make crafts and create, and splash around at the Gold Fish Swim School water play station.
Things to bring: small umbrellas, chairs, blankets and a reusable water bottle.Things to leave at home: tents, coolers, pets, and outside food/beverages.
A sought-after collaborator to some of today’s top hitmakers, undeniable music royalty, and vocal abilities matched by few, five-time GRAMMY award-winning Lalah Hathaway is an artist, singer/songwriter, and producer not to be slept on. A purveyor of many genres whilst sharing Grammy-win records with the likes of Beyoncé (the only two to have ever won in the Best Traditional R&B Performance category three times), Lalah’s seven solo albums are complemented by an illustrious track-record of collaborations with the likes of Pharrell Williams, Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Dre, Anderson. Paak, Robert Glasper, Rapsody, Snoop Dogg, Esperanza Spalding and more. Her talents have inspired invitations to the stage from music legends, Prince, Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock to name a few, and her work even made the Oscars 2021 short list for Best Original Song. As daughter to the late, great Donny Hathaway and the product of an incredibly musical family, Chicago-born and raised Lalah Hathaway has the most soulful of music running through her veins. 2023 will see the release of much-anticipated new original work from Lalah as she continues to forge a lane all of her own.
