State Lawmakers Want Employers to Provide Employees With Detailed Paystubs

Lawmakers in Richmond are considering legislation to prevent wage theft.

Employers in Virginia are required to provide paystubs to their employees showing how their salary is calculated, but only if that’s requested in writing. And many people don’t get paystubs because they don’t know to ask.

Senator Frank Wagner is a Republican from Virginia Beach. He says it’s time for employers to provide paystubs to all their employees showing how their salary is calculated and how much is being withheld for taxes.

“Banks typically require you to show a paystub, to show proof that you’re earning income. So for those individuals not getting paystubs, they’d be totally ineligible for everything that those of us who do receive paystubs enjoy day in and day out.”

This week, his bill sailed out of a Senate panel with zero no votes. But that doesn’t mean it’ll be smooth sailing on the other side of the Capitol.

“Well I’m not naive about the differences that exist between the House and the Senate.”

That’s Delegate Lashrece Aird, a Democrat from Petersburg, who has a similar bill in the House.

“This is a common-sense measure that ensures our Virginians that are working hard do not have to worry about wage theft, that they have proof of their income and receive their paystubs.”

Her bill is expected to be considered by a House subcommittee next week.
