Lawmakers on Court, the Basketball Court

In a break from legislative action, Virginia’s lawmakers took to the court Tuesday  night -- the basketball court. An annual fundraiser for Virginia Commonwealth University’s cancer center, the Capitol Classic throws together politicians, lobbyists, and the Governor’s staff in friendly competition.

It wasn’t Republicans versus Democrats Tuesday night.

It was governor’s Staff versus lobbyists, house lawmakers versus senate lawmakers. Everyone was there as part of the 8th Capitol Classic, a light-hearted --- but surprisingly competitive --  annual event.

Republican Chris Jones, chair of the House Finance Committee, was the enthusiastic coach of the House team.

Fueling the energy in VCU’s Siegel Center were the cheering squads of pages, 13 and 14-year-olds who serve at the House or Senate throughout the session.

In the end, Delegates beat the Senators team, 44-42, upsetting the Senate’s shot at a three year streak. But, the real winner of the night was Massey Cancer Center, walking away with a check for almost $40,000.
