The latest standardized test scores are out. According to a release today from the Department of Education, Virginia students’ performance on the SOL’s have dropped very slightly from last year.
Pass rates in reading, writing, math, science and history have all dropped, but only by one-to-two percentage points each.
And as Charles Pyle, with the Virginia Department of Education, points out -- the long-term trend is towards growth.
“It’s important to keep in mind that student are performing at a much higher level than they were six years ago when we first introduced the much more challenging standards and assessments across the curriculum,” says Pyle.
Pass rates have traditionally been the primary factor in determining accreditation. But this year the state is changing the system - placing a higher weight on growth. Accreditation scores come out at the end of September.
