Thursday: 1,706 COVID-19 Cases in Virginia, UVA Health Joins Clinical Trial

CDC

The number of positive COVID-19 cases in Virginia grew to 1,706 Thursday morning, according to the Virginia Department of Health.

At least 246 people have been hospitalized for the illness and 41 have died.  The number of tests conducted grew to 17,589.

Fairfax County continues to have the most reported cases in the state, at 328.  But health officials have also said they're concerned about clusters in the Richmond area and on the Peninsula near Williamsburg.  Henrico and Chesterfield counties and the City of Richmond have reported a combined total of 212 cases.

UVA Health is joining a national clinical trial for a potential COVID-19 treatment.

In a statement, the health system says adults who have been hospitalized with significant symptoms – including those in need of a ventilator – can now choose to participate.

The drug was previously used as a possible treatment for Ebola. It has also shown promise against MERS and SARS – which are caused by different types of coronavirus.

The VCU health system is also participating in the clinical trial.
