Three Charged in Death of VT Student

Jessica Ewing, a student at Virginia Tech, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Samanata Shrestha, of Vienna, VA. 

Ewing is now at the Western Virginia Regional Jail.

Recent Tech graduate Keifer Kyle Brown is facing charges that he was an accessory after the fact. He's being held at the Montgomery County Jail.

Police have also charged 23-year-old Michael Christian Heller, a Blacksburg resident, with being an accessory after the fact.  He's been released on bond.

More Arrests in Kevin Quick Case

Three people have been arrested and charged in connection with the death of Waynesboro police reservist Kevin Quick.

The three—Halisi Uhuru of Danville, Leslie Casterlow and Anthony Stokes, both from Manassas, are being held at the Henrico County Jail.  They’re scheduled to appear in court Monday.

That makes six people who have been arrested during the investigation.  Earlier this week, a brother and sister were charged with the theft of Quick’s vehicle, a third sibling from the family was taken into custody at the same time, for an outstanding arrest warrant.

The Virginia Senate tackled several bills  addressing acts of violence. And, after lengthy debate, Senators likely killed a measure that would have allowed Virginia to use electrocution as a form of execution, if necessary.

The Senate also gave preliminary approval to a measure to penalize so-called “celebratory gunfire.” 

The Virginia State Senate has approved legislation that expands the rights of a person petitioning for a protective order and puts an alleged abuser on the hook for costs associated with some of the victim’s needs and costs.  

It’s fairly easy for people in Virginia to change their name, but when it comes to sex offenders, one state lawmaker thinks it should be more difficult.
