Charlottesville Symphony and UVA University Singers Family Holiday Concerts

Charlottesville Symphony and UVA University Singers Family Holiday Concerts

The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia and the UVA University Singers join forces for their annual Family Holiday Concerts on Saturday, December 3 at 8:00pm and Sunday, December 4 at 3:30pm. Michael Slon, director of UVA's premiere vocal ensemble and music director of the Oratorio Society of Virginia, will conduct both performances at Old Cabell Hall on the Grounds of the University of Virginia.

Through the years, these concerts have become an eagerly awaited holiday tradition. This year’s program is brimming with festive favorites for concertgoers young and old: “Carol of the Bells”, Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride, “Somewhere in My Memory” from the American Christmas family comedy film Home Alone, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Dance of the Tumblers” from The Snow Maiden and “Hallelujah” from Handel’s Messiah.
The always popular “Twelve Days of Christmas” with hilarious audience participation returns. UVA student and vocal soloist Jack Siegel performs “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.”

Charlottesville Symphony Principal Clarinet Jiyeon Choi is featured in a set of variations on “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” The orchestra also performs Hanukkah Freylachs, a compilation of rousing melodies arranged by Charlottesville Symphony Music Director Benjamin Rous. And the University Singers will offer several a cappella selections including the world premiere of “There were Shepherds” by Michael Slon.

The Charlottesville Symphony’s 2022-23 concert season is made possible by a major grant from the Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation.

Free parking is available in the UVA Central Grounds Parking Garage, located on Emmet Street South. The Charlottesville Free Trolley stops at McCormick Road near the UVA Amphitheater, in close proximity to Old Cabell Hall, which is wheelchair accessible.

Tickets are $20-$47 for adults and $11 for students, and may be purchased at the University of Virginia Arts Box Office, (434) 924-3376, 12:00-5:00pm, Tuesday through Friday in the lobby of the UVA Drama Building at 109 Culbreth Road, or online at www.artsboxoffice.virginia.edu.
