Charlottesville Symphony Masterworks Concert

Charlottesville Symphony Masterworks Concert
The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia continues its 49th season on Saturday, November 11, 7:30pm, at Old Cabell Hall on the Grounds of the University of Virginia and Sunday, November 12, 3:30pm, at Charlottesville High School’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center.
Music Director Benjamin Rous conducts the orchestra in Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major. Described as “grand”, “heroic” and “virtuosic”, the “Emperor” concerto is widely considered one of the most popular works in the piano concerto repertoire as evidenced by its first-place ranking in a recent Sirius XM Symphony Hall listeners survey of the top 76 concertos.
Arunesh Nadgir is the piano soloist. Currently head of the piano department at Middle Tennessee State University, Nadgir also maintains an active international career as a soloist, chamber musician and teacher.
UVA’s 85-voice University Singers joins the orchestra on the second half of the program. Conductor Michael Slon will lead both ensembles in his conception of a four-movement, American choral “symphony” that includes the finale from Aaron Copland’s Canticle of Freedom, Equus by Eric Whitacre, Jennifer Higdon’s O magnum mysterium, and a cantata for chorus, orchestra and tenor soloist - "I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes" by Adolphus Hailstork. The tenor soloist is Antonio Chase who was the featured soloist in a performance of the cantata by the Morgan State University Choir broadcast on Maryland Public Television.
The orchestra’s November concerts are underwritten in part by a generous anonymous donor. Arunesh Nadgir’s appearance is made possible by the Angus Macaulay Visiting Artist Fund.
Free parking is available in the UVA Central Grounds Parking Garage, located on Emmet Street South on Saturday nights and at Charlottesville High School’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center on Sunday afternoons. The Charlottesville Free Trolley stops at McCormick Road near the UVA Amphitheater, in close proximity to Old Cabell Hall. Both venues are wheelchair accessible.
