Juneteenth Jazz Concert
Juneteenth Jazz Concert
On June 16, 2023, from 6 - 8pm, Old City Cemetery Museums & Arboretum will host Lynchburg native jazz pianist Isaac Williams and his Jazz Quartet here in the Earley Memorial Shrub Garden. Tickets are just $5 a person.
Guests will enjoy Isaac’s take on beloved jazz classics by Stevie Wonder, George Gershwin, Wayne Shorter, and others, as well as some of his own original compositions. He will be joined by Joseph Henson on the saxophone, Jonah Horton on the bass, and Nate Gilmore on the drums.
This show will also feature a special performance by talented vocalist, performer and historic interpreter Temika Younger. She will perform an original song by composer James Ballard about Old City Cemetery’s Lottie Payne Stratton, or “Miss Boonie,” who worked as the last ticket-taker for the Lynchburg Academy Center’s segregated black seating section.
Guests should bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy lawn seating under a shaded canopy. Barbecue and veggie bowls will be available on site for purchase. This is a family-friendly event and a great opportunity to kick off a weekend of Juneteenth celebration here in the Hill City!
Tickets can be purchased at www.gravegarden.org/events , or by calling the office of Old City Cemetery Museums & Arboretum at (434) 847-1465.
