The Constitution of Virginia—Then and Now

The Constitution of Virginia—Then and Now

The same month and year that a Virginian drafted the Declaration of Independence, Virginians wrote and ratified the original Constitution of Virginia, a document that parallels America’s road to and from the Revolution. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of emeritus University of Virginia Law Professor A.E. Dick Howard’s seminal work, "Commentaries on the Constitution of Virginia," and the publication of Virginia Supreme Court Justice Stephen R. McCullough’s treatise "Virginia Constitutional Law." These works bookend a half-century of useful scholarship on Virginia’s Constitution and its nuanced relationship to the U.S. Constitution.

Participants include Former Acting Solicitor General of Virginia Trevor S. Cox, Professor A. E. Dick Howard, Virginia Court of Appeals Judge Lisa Lorish, and Virginia Supreme Court Justice Stephen R. McCullough.
