The Roanoke Puppetry & Movement Slam

The Roanoke Puppetry & Movement Slam

Roanoke Puppetry & Movement Slam: Spring Equinox is an evening of short-form experimental performance celebrating puppetry, movement, and visual storytelling. Regional artists and local performers will present bold original pieces blending puppetry, shadow theatre, physical theatre, music, and dance.

Structured as a “slam,” the event features a fast-moving series of short performances, each exploring the creative possibilities of movement and animated objects. Audiences can expect an eclectic mix of styles—from handcrafted puppets and projected shadow figures to collaborative movement pieces and musical storytelling.
Timed to coincide with the Spring Equinox, the event celebrates creativity, renewal, and artistic experimentation while highlighting Roanoke’s growing community of performance artists.

The evening will feature a curated lineup of regional artists alongside short pieces from local creators. It will conclude with a playful shadow puppet improvisation inviting audience members to step behind the screen and join in the act of visual storytelling.

Whether you’re a longtime fan of puppetry or simply curious about inventive live performance, the Roanoke Puppetry & Movement Slam offers a lively and imaginative night of theatre.
