A feasibility study of locations for a new rail station in the New River Valley is now underway.

The study will look at three sites near the New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg and a fourth in the Ellett area of Montgomery County. A fifth location on North Franklin Street in Christiansburg has already been ruled out.

The study will include a public input meeting this winter and two online surveys.

The goal is to have engineering complete in 2022 or 2023 and construction finished no later than 2025.

Amtrak's Northeast Regional service currently runs between Roanoke and Washington, DC. In May, state officials announced agreements to extend the service to the Christiansburg area by 2025.
