CVS Pharmacy Rolls Out COVID-19 Vaccination Program for Virginians 65 and Older

CVS Pharmacies have begun registering Virginians 65 and older for COVID-19 vaccinations.

The program -- which is part of a national strategy to roll out doses to pharmacies across the country -- started Tuesday. Pharmacy locations across Virginia will begin administering shots on Friday.

The company has been working with state officials over the last week to make sure the program lines up with Virginia’s overall vaccine plan. There were some hiccups in trying to get the state's registration system to work with the CVS one, and it appears that logistical issue doesn't have an easy fix.

In a press call Tuesday, Dr. Danny Avula, who is spearheading the state's vaccination efforts, said they should still be able to track who gets a shot -- whether through CVS or a local health department -- but there likely will be a delay in that data.

Unfortunately, people already registered through the health department to get a vaccine cannot register at a CVS location.

The program will administer 26,000 doses a week.

CVS is the first of Virginia's pharmacy partners in the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program for COVID-19 Vaccination to move forward with immunizations. Other pharmacy companies are set to come into the fold in the near future.

You can find more information on how to register with CVS here.
