Voters in Virginia and New Jersey are choosing new governors. Both races began with an emphasis on statewide issues such as property taxes and education policy.
Now, in the closing weeks of the campaigns, both have morphed into the latest test of President Trump's influence down the ballot.
We're updating results from all races as they come in.

Update: 10:58 PM
Democrats are making big gains in the House of Delegates. Among the winners is Chris Hurst. The former
television anchor unseated incumbent Republican Joseph Yost in the New River Valley.
Democrats needed 17 seats to take a majority in the House. They have picked up 15 with two races still undecided and a few others subject to a recount. Few political analysts expected that big of a swing.
Update 9:08 PM
Democrat Justin Fairfax has defeated Republican Jill Vogel as Lieutenant Governor
Democratic incumbent Mark Herring has defeated Republican John Adams for Attorney General.
Democrats have sweep the three top spots in the state and have currently flipped 12 House seats with several more to be decided. The race in the SW VA's 12th District has been called for Democrat Chris Hurst.

Update 8:56 PM:
Reporter Michael Pope speaks with Tom Perriello at the Northam election party at George Mason University. Perriello challenged Northam for the nomination in the primary, then fervently supported Northam in his bid for the governorship.

Update 8:48 PM:
President Donald Trump has weighed in on Republican Ed Gillespie's loss to Democrat Ralph Northam:
Ed Gillespie worked hard but did not embrace me or what I stand for. Don’t forget, Republicans won 4 out of 4 House seats, and with the economy doing record numbers, we will continue to win, even bigger than before!

Mallory Noe-Payne reports from the Gillespie Election party in Richmond:
Just a few minutes ago Gillespie supporters told me they were settling in for a long night, expecting this to be a close call.
But now just an hour and a half after polls closed the race has been called for Democrat Ralph Northam, There’s no recognition of that fact here yet. People are still milling and eating, checking their phones.
We haven’t heard anything from Gillespie or the Republican party. A local television station that was being played on a big screen has been turned off.
Of course there’s still the Lt governor and attorney general races, as well as House of Delegates seats.
Update 8:19 PM:
The gubernatorial race has been called for Democrat Ralph Northam

Update 7:55 PM:
Voters braved chilly temperatures and cold rain to vote today, although the turnout numbers are still unclear at this point. Michael Pope is at the Northam campaign with more.
It’s like rain on your election day, that driving cold hard rain that many Democrats worry might dampen turnout. I’m here with Gail Gordon, an Alexandria Democrat. She says she doesn’t believe the rain will have that much of an influence.
Democrat are hoping the overall turnout number is closer to 45% of registered voters. If it drops down to 40%, Republican Ed Gillespie is expected to have an edge in the hotly contested race for governor.
And down I-95 a bit, RADIO IQ’s Mallory Noe-Payne is with the Gillespie campaign outside of Richmond.
Things are still pretty quiet here. The room isn’t quite full. Gillespie was out working the polls until the last minute, so there’s no sign of him yet.
Everyone’s trying to read the tea leaves of turnout. In 2013, when McAuliffe was elected, turnout was about 43% of registered voters. Generally higher turnout is good news for Democrats.
Of course, In Virginia we can wind up with a Democratic Governor and a Republican Lieutenant Governor. So it’s more than just the Governor’s race people could be celebrating here tonight. Jill Vogel, the Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor has run a different campaign than Gillespie - she’s been courting Trump voters hard. Virginia has never had a female governor OR lieutenant Governor. So if she wins, that’ll change.
Update 7:49 PM:
Democrat Chris Hurst pulls ahead of Republican incumbent Joseph Yost in SW Virginia's 12th district with 17% reporting: Hurst with 55% of vote, Yost with 45%
Update 7:36 PM
With 35% reporting in the 13th district in Northern Virginia, Democrat Danica Roem maintains a solid lead over Republican incumbent Bob Marshall.

Update 7:22 PM
Democrats are gathered in Northern Virginia to go over election returns. Michael Pope is there.
The mood here on the campus of George Mason University is upbeat and positive, but still cautiously optimistic. They’re concerned about what might happen if Republicans an Ed Gillespie is elected governor. I’m here with Anna Scholl with Progress Virginia, who has become concerned about tone of this campaign:
You hear that from a lot of Democrats here who were hoping that a Northam Gillespie campaign would be issue-oriented. But the final few weeks of the campaign have been one negative attack after another.
