State Health Officials: Three Outbreak Areas in Virginia

CDC

The Virginia Department of Health says there are now 77 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Virginia.

They have also identified three outbreak areas – locations where two or more cases can be traced to a single contact. Dr. Norman Oliver, the state’s health commissioner, addressed members of the media this morning during a news conference with Governor Ralph Northam.

“As you know one of those outbreaks is in the Peninsula Health District – specifically in James City County where we have 17 cases. We also have two other outbreaks in Richmond.”

City leaders in Richmond announced this morning that there are four confirmed cases there – two people in their 20’s and another two individuals in their 30’s.

There are still no confirmed cases in southwestern Virginia.

State leaders also provided guidance for childcare providers across Virginia -- suggesting that only 10 individuals, including staff and children, should be in a classroom at one time. The state Department of Social Services also asks those facilities to feed kids in their classrooms and plans to provide tips on how to keep children at least six feet apart.

Northam also asked Virginians to donate blood if they can safely do so. The American Red Cross is currently experiencing a shortage of blood due to cancelled blood drive events.
