Virginia Tech, UVA, Other Colleges Move Classes Online, Send Students Home

Virginia Tech, the University of Virginia and several other colleges and universities are moving classes online and sending students home.  The changes come as cases of COVID-19 increase.

Virginia Tech President Timothy Sands announced Wednesday evening that all classes will move online starting March 23.  Spring Break will be extended until that time.

Virginia Tech says the Blacksburg campus will remain open past March 23rd.  But classes will not be conducted in-person, according to the statement.  University events that are expected to draw more than 100 people are canceled through April 30th.  Athletic events will continue as scheduled, though spectator access is still being evaluated.

The Charlottesville school also prohibited all university gatherings involving more than 100 people "for the foreseeable future."

The university said online classes will begin March 19.  Students who are away on spring break are encouraged to stay home, or return home if they're not already there.  University officials will reasses the changes on April 5th, at the earliest.

University buildings and UVA Health will remain open.  Restrictions on gatherings do not include athletic events and events at John Paul Jones arena at this time.  Staff should continue to report to work and take recommended steps to prevent illness.
