Oct 19 Sunday
When a relationship ends, it can feel like the earth has shifted beneath you. Divorce, separation, or parting from a partner can bring waves of grief—but healing is possible.
For 35 years, Divorce Recovery Workshop (DRW) at Richmond’s First Baptist Church has been a lifeline for thousands of people in these moments—a place to find understanding, strength, and hope when the future feels uncertain.
Eight consecutive Sunday sessions from 5-7:30 p.m. in Flamming Hall. The cost with pre-registration is $75 by September 11, $85 after.
We welcome the young and elementary school-age children of our participants: we provide child care for babies through pre-school age children and we offer age-appropriate activities and programming for kindergarteners through 5th graders. These offerings are FREE and your child will be provided snacks or a light meal.
We approach this program as an outreach to all people with our mission to help anyone who is suffering. People of all faiths, or none, are warmly welcomed. We do not evangelize, preach, read scripture, or proselytize during the workshop. We offer a program to help everyone who is suffering from the loss of a love relationship to heal from the emotional pain of their loss.

About the Artist: Comedian Shuler King was born Frank Williams III in Sumter, South Carolina. He knew at an early age that he was destined to be an entertainer especially since he was the kid known for cracking jokes. King grew up in a traditional 2-parent household in the Bible Belt of the South, where Faith, Hard Work and Education were the foundations of what his parents imparted on him and his two siblings. Comedy is his passion, but he has taken a rather unusual path to get to where he is thus far. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a B.A. in Media Arts where he joined The Mighty Illustrious Zeta Zeta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. In 2013 he graduated from Gupton Jones Mortuary College with a degree in Mortuary Science. When he isn’t on the road performing at comedy clubs and special events across the country, King works as a licensed funeral director and embalmer in Georgia and South Carolina at his family’s funeral business in South Carolina. He wants to keep his family’s business and legacy alive. He’s probably the only Comedian/Funeral Director on the comedy circuit. King has opened for some of the most notable and talented comedians and comediennes in the industry. He credits his parents strict yet loving upbringing, his harsh surroundings growing up and the state of the country today with giving him his comedic style, which he describes as RAW. King says “Comedy isn’t about being happy all the time. Comedy is just as much about pain that people endure. When you hear 20,000 people in an arena laugh at a joke it’s because they all can relate to experiencing that same pain”. His comedy career began while he was a Freshman in college, after he took the stage for the very first time at the NCO Club on a military base and the rest is history. King is one of the most energetic rising comedians in the business. Although the comedy business can be very tough and filled with ups and downs, King credits his unwavering Faith in God as the calming force in his life which keeps him pushing forward. His hilarious videos he posts on his social media have quickly become fan favorites. His recent video post about Donald Trump went viral and was even played on a UK television show. The future is definitely bright for King.

The League of Women Voters of the Charlottesville Area is bringing new opportunities for community voices to be heard and for voters to prepare for the upcoming election.
From late September through October, the League will host a series of Listening Tables across Charlottesville and Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson counties. Listening Tables are small, informal gatherings that bring community members and candidates together—not for debates, but for conversations. These events give residents the chance to share what matters most in their daily lives and allow candidates to listen directly, in advance of the November 4th election.
One of these Listening Tables will be held for Greene County residents to meet with their local candidates seeking election. The event will be held at the Greene County Library on Monday, October 20th from 6:00 to 7:30 pm.

UVA’s Digital Technology for Democracy Lab, The Sloane Lab, and the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences present “An Evening with Karen Hao” at Old Cabell Hall. This free event is open to the public – please reserve your seats by registering.
In Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman’s OpenAI (Penguin Press, 2025), Karen Hao, a leading tech journalist and frequent contributor to The Atlantic, tells the behind-the-scenes story of how a cadre of the most powerful companies in human history is reshaping the world in its image. The first journalist to ever profile OpenAI, Karen’s insight has been called “excellent and deeply reported” by The New York Times. Empire of AI is a page-turning thriller, an “essential work of public education” (Shoshanna Zuboff), and a revelatory portrait of the people controlling AI technology. It is the jaw-dropping story of ambition and ego, hype and speculation, plunder and destruction, politics and labor, and, of course, money and power—a brilliant and deeply necessary look at the industry defining our era, and what the future holds.
