Bobby Scott Joins House Military Vets in Show of Support for Clinton

Michael Pope

Democrats are hoping that Donald Trump’s behavior on the campaign trail may be able to help them with military voters in Virginia.

Congressman Bobby Scott of Newport News is joining with other military veterans in the House of Representatives who say Hillary Clinton is the best choice for veterans and their families this fall. Scott served in the Massachusetts National Guard.

“As many Republicans have said, Mr. Trump is somewhat erratic and not as reliable. You can’t trust him in terms of insulting our allies and so I think those who are serving would want someone like Hillary Clinton as commander in chief."

Geoff Skelley at the University of Virginia Center for Politics says veterans tend to be more white and more male than the population in general, which means they’re more Republican.

“It’s very much about the margins, so maybe Clinton could do a little bit better. Maybe she could do as well as Obama did in 2008 when he lost that vote 54/44 to McCain.

That would be John McCain, whom Trump said was not a hero because he was captured. Scott says that’s just one more example of why Democrats might be able to pick up some new supporters this year.
