A New Bridge is Now Part of Virginia's Capital City

Kelley Libby

Last week, Richmond opened the T. Tyler Potterfield Memorial Bridge, an $11.3 million project that connects the north and south banks of the James River.

The new pedestrian and bicycle bridge opened shortly after Richmond’s annual Grand Illumination ceremony, the moment when the city’s skyline is outlined in thousands of holiday lights. Hundreds of citizens then crossed the 10-foot-wide bridge from both sides of the James River.

The bridge is part of the 2012 Richmond Riverfront Plan, which envisions greater access for citizens to the river. Named in memory of city planner Tyler Potterfield, the bridge connects Brown’s Island near downtown to the southside neighborhood of Manchester.
