RC Poll: Virginia Shoppers Looking to Spend This Holiday Season

Roanoke College

The holiday shopping season is now officially upon us. And one recent survey of shoppers reveals this is likely to be a lucrative year.

Seven out of ten Virginians say they’ll spend at least as much this holiday season as they did last year, maybe more. That’s according to a new survey from Roanoke College.

Alice Kassens helped conduct the survey, and she says the responses indicate a thriving economic landscape.

“It’s just an indicator that the economy is doing quite well in Virginia and that people feel comfortable enough with their current jobs and what they think is coming in the next year that they can spend a little bit more money.”

Three out of four people in Central Virginia say they’ll spend more than last year, an indication this part of the Commonwealth may see the biggest increase in holiday cash.

“I don’t know what the reason is with Central Virginia. But if I were a retailer there I would be very excited about people coming into my stores.”

And it’s not just brick-and-mortar stores that will be feeling the holiday cheer. More than 40% of people in Virginia say they’ll do their holiday shopping online.
