Governor Ralph Northam wants to extend the current school year into the summer, giving K-12 students more time to catch up on lessons lost due to the pandemic.
Northam’s comments came in a live video chat Thursday with the Washington Post. “Our kids need to be back in school. Our parents need a break too," Northam noted. "We’ve asked a lot for the past year, from our children and their families, and now it’s time for us to help them. I think to help them out, to give them some extra time this summer, to get them prepared, would be in everybody’s best interest.”
The governor says he’s working with school boards and superintendents on how to safely return students to the classroom.
Northam plans to reveal more information at 11 Friday morning in a weekly update on the state’s response to COVID-19.
