Justin Fuente is out as football coach at Virginia Tech.

In an announcement from Hokie Sports, Director of Athletics Whit Babcock has said the university and Fuente have mutually agreed to part ways.

Babcock says a national search is underway to fill the position. Co-defensive line coach J.C. Price will serve as interim coach for the rest of the 2021 season. The team has a 5-5 record. He finished with an overall record of 43-31 and 4 bowl appearances.

Tech and Fuente reached a compromise on a $10 million dollar buyout in his contract. Both sides agreed to lower that number to a little over $8.7 million.

Babcock says “While it is never easy to make a change, I believe in order for our football program to attain the type of sustain success that is expected at Virginia Tech, the time was right for new leadership of our football program.”

In a later statement, Fuente thanked the university community, athletes and coaches. "We leave Blacksburg with many great memories, but above all else, our family cherishes the many relationships that have been established and that will always endure," Fuente said. "To all of those players, coaches and staff who are still fighting on, know that the Fuente family is always cheering for you."
