Free Quilt Show features 70-80 quilted items from Art Quilts to Bed Quilts to Wearable Quilts. Winners in 6 categories determined by popular vote.

The Salem Museum is pleased to unveil its latest featured exhibit, “Salem’s Hidden Hero: Andrew Lewis and the Revolutionary War.” Now open in the Main Gallery through early September. Chronicling Lewis’ life and lynchpin status in the course of the American Revolution, visitors can try on garments, handle tools, and interact with materials resembling those of Revolutionary era Virginia.

Visitors will step back in time more than 250 years ago to a colony on the brink of conflict. Following the life of Andrew Lewis – a pioneering resident of what would one day be Salem and who led western Virginia’s militia in its fight to secure frontier settlements – this exhibit showcases the life story of an unsung Revolutionary War hero who helped expel the British from Virginia and shape a foundling nation in its infancy. Examine a handwritten account of an eyewitness to Lewis in battle, observe authentic swords and muskets used during the Revolution, and discover the hidden legacy of this larger-than-life figure.

Unique to this exhibit are the extensive hands-on clothing, tools, and books displayed throughout the gallery. Visitors can dress like a British redcoat, don a workingman’s jacket, put on a hat identical to Martha Washington’s, or handle an embroidered apron. In the aroma station, participants can put their noses to the test and compare the smells of common Colonial kitchens ingredients. Visitors can even hold a replica musket and drill like Revolutionary soldiers did!

Unsatisfied as a waitress working in a small-town diner, Jenna dreams of a life beyond bad tips and her complicated marriage. When a nearby baking contest offers the chance of escape, Jenna finds the courage to take her long-abandoned dreams off the shelf with the support of her fellow waitresses, loyal customers, and an unexpected romance.

About the Artists:
He has been called one of the most original stand-up comics in the country, and his performances leave audiences laughing in tears. Michael Blackson, aka, ‘The African King of Comedy’, has been entertaining audiences all across the country and around the globe for more than a decade. Inspired by the stand up comedy of Eddie Murphy, Blackson began to develop his comedic talent in 1992 in the unkind comedy clubs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Blackson’s comedic appeal grew from his involvement with BET’s ComicView series, HBO’s Def Comedy Jam, Showtime at Harlem, and Live in Hollywood. However, it was in a Los Angeles comedy club where Blackson got his big break. Blackson was performing at the Comedy Store where actor/director Ice Cube was in attendance to see comedian Mike Epps perform. But after experiencing Blackson’s performance, Ice Cube invited the young comic for a reading…and the rest is smash hit history! Blackson’s outstanding and unforgettable performance in the smash hit comedy, Next Friday, drew praise and a fan following like no other.
After his scene stealing performance in Next Friday, fans wanted more, and in 2005, Blackson would not disappoint. He released his top-selling sketch comedy CD entitled, Modasucka, Welcome to America. With Blackson, the work never stops. Along with special guest appearances on some of the hottest music videos, Blackson stole the stage on P. Diddy’s Bad Boys of Comedy on HBO and starred in a commercial for the Chappelle Show on Comedy Central. There’s no mistaking Blackson for any other comedian when he takes the stage.

Nick Deez. Is that his real last name???? Who knows. He’s single handedly proving not all stepdads are crazy. Nick grew up an only child which he gave him his quick wit and warped sense of humor. He’s performed in comedy clubs across the U.S., and is a regular at the Richmond and Virginia Beach Funny Bone clubs. His debut special “Urn My Love” will be coming later this year, so be sure to be on the lookout for it because you won’t want to miss it!
